Sherd of a samian cup with engraving

This sherd of a samian cup dates from c. AD 55-65, and was found in Goldsmith Street, Exeter. It has been incised with the graffito ‘L IVLI IPPONIA’, meaning 'the property of Lucius Julius Hipponicus'. He was presumably a legionary soldier, and is the first Exeter person whose name is known.
