Items from a Belgian battlefield

The envelope with this train ticket and German bank note reveal their significance: these items were taken from a German soldier on the battlefield at Ypres. We do not know much about the man who donated these items to the museum only fifteen days after the end of the First World War. He was an Exeter resident, and had probably seen active service in the horrific battles at this site. Today these items are a poignant reminder of history.
