Detail of a willow basket
Back to Time PeriodHousehold items made from organic materials like wood and leather would have been very common in the Roman town but rarely survive in the archaeological record. This photograph shows a close-up detail of a basket which was found during excavations in Exeter. It is made from strips of willow which have been woven together. It is the only Roman basket to have been discovered from Roman Exeter, but unfortunately it proved impossible to conserve.
