The City Wall at Quay Lane

At Quay Lane, between the Inner Bypass and Exeter Quay, there survives this stretch of Roman facework. It consists of coursed blocks of grey volcanic stone (‘Trap’), quarried locally - perhaps at Rougemont. In later centuries the ground level in front of the wall was lowered, so the Roman foundations were faced with red Heavitree stone. The lower stone is thus much later than the upper.
