Hoard of coins from the Valiant Soldier Inn site, Holloway Street

The hoard was found during excavation in Holloway Street in 1973-4 on the site of the Valiant Soldier public house. It consists of three different denominations of Roman coin - the as, sestertius and dupondius - of three emperors, Claudius, Nero and Vespasian. They must have been deposited after AD 73 (the year in which the latest coin in the hoard was first struck); it can be estimated that they were buried in AD73 – 5. The coins were found dispersed from their original find-spots, scattered in the soil above demolished military buildings.
