The Pennington foundry under excavation

The photograph looks from the back of the Penningtons' house to the back of their narrow tenement; the city wall is at the top of the image. The casting room was built against the back of the city wall. In front of it stands a cobbled courtyard with narrow lean-to structures on three sides. The pit in the foreground is a water-tank. The Penningtons had their foundry here from c.1625 until 1720.
