Stukeley’s prospect of Exeter

Stukeley’s prospect of Exeter

The antiquary William Stukeley drew this prospect in 1723. In the foreground is the floodplain of the Exe, with Exe Bridge (right) supporting houses on all but six of its arches. Although the view of the city is much simplified, it nevertheless shows a number of details not recorded elsewhere, such as the crenellations then still surviving on the city wall.
