The Custom House c1690
Back to Time PeriodThe Custom House, Exeter Quay, c.1690, 1988 by Jayne Brayne © Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter
In the late 1670s major improvements were made to the Exeter Canal. These were followed by new works at the Quay, whose centrepiece was the new Custom House of 1680-1.
The view, by J. Brayne, shows the Custom House with its open colonnade on the ground floor, and with the central portion of the building projecting in front of the wings, a design altered in the early years of the 18th century.
