Plan of the Roman military defences at Topsham

Excavations conducted in 1999 by Exeter Archaeology in advance of building work at Topsham Combined School revealed two large parallel ditches, each V-shaped in section. Such ditches are typical of the defences of Roman forts, and one of them produced pottery of the first century AD. Although only a small part of the site has been explored, they indicate the presence of some form of Roman fort in this area.
