Archaeological record of the plaster ceiling at 144 Fore Street

No. 144 Fore Street is a late 17th-century house, much altered at later dates. It retains on its first floor this extraordinary lime plaster ceiling. At the centre of two panels are oval wreaths surrounding plates of food. The surrounding plasterwork is ornamented with a bizarre range of exotic animals- unicorns chasing a fox, camel, monkey, stag and lion.
